We are asked by our customers almost every day how they can upgrade their MCSE 2012 to 2016. However, this question is a bit odd, because neither MCSE 2012 nor MCSE 2016 are existing certifications.
It is understandable that people ask the question. A few years ago, Microsoft introduced updated MCSA, MCSD and MCSE certifications. MCSA certifications could be achieved at the product level in combination with a version, for example: MCSA Windows Server 2012.
MCSE certifications could then be obtained by adding a "solution" to the related MCSA certification, for example: MCSE Windows Server Infrastructure.
In other words, there is no simple answer to the question of upgrading MCSE 2012 to 2016. The MSCA part of the MCSE certification can be upgraded. You can upgrade your MCSA Windows Server 2012 to MCSA Windows Server 2016. However, that does not affect the MCSE certification.
What about MCSE Certification?
Microsoft has listed the best answer on its website. People who have an active MCSE certification on or after September 26, 2016 will automatically be assigned the related MSCE version in the form that will continue to exist after March 31, 2017. These are:
- MCSE Cloud Platform and Infrastructure
- MCSE Data Management and Analytics
- MCSE Mobility
- MCSE Productivity
Those who have MCSE Server Infrastructure will therefore automatically inherit MCSE Cloud Platform and Infrastructure.
