ITIL version 3.0 Certification
The certifications are available on 3 different levels:
Foundation
The new Foundation Level remains similar to the existing course,
with the same examination format, but with more focus on the
Service Lifecycle phases and where the new and existing processes
and functions fit within these. There is less detailed emphasis on
some of the processes and methods as there are now more to cover.
The Foundation certificate, as now, is a pre-requisite to the next
level of courses. Also, the Foundation certificate is worth 2
credits towards achieving the ITIL Expert.
Intermediate
There are two streams here, a Lifecycle stream
and a Capability stream.
- Each of the 5 Lifecycle stream
courses covers one core book (thus one phase of the
Service Lifecycle), and replaces the version2 Manager’s course,
which covered only the two core books (Service Delivery and Service
Support). The Intermediate
Lifecycle certificates are each worth 3
credits towards achieving the ITIL Diploma.
- Each of the 4 Capability stream
courses covers a set of processes, similar to a version2
clustered practitioner course. The Intermediate
Capability certificates are each worth 4
credits towards achieving the ITIL Diploma.
There is also a course available called
Managing Across The Lifecycle (worth 5
credits) which consolidates knowledge of the
Service Lifecycle and is taken once you have achieved 17
points.
Gaining 22 credits through
Foundation, Intermediate (Capability and/or Lifecycle) enables one
to achieve the ITIL Expert (without further
examinations)!
Higher
This level is still being developed, but may well consist of
achievement in something other than ITIL examinations, such a
recognition from others based on a body of work, or amount of
practical experience.

Helpful information
What about existing version 2.0 courses – do they
count as credits?
- Yes, each V2 qualification gained counts
towards the 22 credits required for the ITIL Diploma.
- You will need to talk with your training
provider about the exact credits gained, especially regarding
single and clustered practitioner courses
The following information can be used as a
guide:
- A V2 Foundation will be worth 1.5 credits
rather than 2. A V3 Bridge (conversion) course and examination
worth 0.5 credits will be available to bridge this gap.
- V2 Practitioner single courses will be worth
1 credit each, and Clustered Practitioners courses 3.75 credits
each.
- The V2 Manager’s Certificate will be worth 15
credit (i.e. the same as 5 Service Lifecycle courses of 3 credits
each)
- There will also be a V3 Manager’s Bridge
course/exam worth 5 points to allow people with Manager’s
certificates to gain the diploma (without having to sit additional
Capability courses)
